If you watch Will Laut’s music video for their latest single, Lost & Found, you might think you’re about to start a horror movie or even a trippy Gaspar Noé film. And you might be right, only this one is just three minutes and a half long (a pity!). This project conceived between Los Angeles and Paris by Frankie Gothard and William Laut is a blend of noir minimalism and ambient pop, and it is as captivating as it sounds.
It is paramount to first know each part of the duo to understand how this pairing came to be. Frankie Gothard, aka COH, was known for his role in the computer avant-garde scene of the late ‘90s, and he collaborated with vocal performers like John Balance of Coil, Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle, and fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester. On the other hand, the duo’s singer and frontman, William Laut, was once a Eurovision contender and has a rich and diverse musical background that includes composing rock anthems, organising Asian showcase festivals, and even working with children’s choirs.
Now, these two have got together to unify their talent and craft a unique sound blending their vast experience. Back in February this year, the duo Will Laut released their first single, titled Not the Day, via Wavetrap (the record label established in 1999 by COH and John Everall). Today, Will Laut are back with Lost & Found, their second single, where synths are the main character accompanying the vocalist’s eerie, mysterious voice. The accompanying music video isn’t short of strangne, where we see Will walk at night across a small town to end up atop of a hill facing the sea. An experience you have to listen to and watch for yourself.
