“Freak Like Me is a song that my 13-year-old-self wanted and needed to embrace every element of me that has been misunderstood”, says Brooke Candy about her song. Made in collaboration with Toopoor and featured in her recently released album Sexorcism (through Nuxxe Records), the track is an ode to embracing being a misfit who doesn’t fit society’s standards. “I’ve always felt like an outcast for being myself, but I don’t know any other way to live. My hope is that this song uplifts those that are disenfranchised or ostracized for being themselves and inspires people to find their inner freak”, Candy concludes.
Co-directed by the singer herself and Rony Alwin, the video for Freak Like Me is a mixture of kitsch, Japanese kawaii, and all-things-pink. In-between mockery and appreciation, Brooke and Toopoor are styled in pastel colours, bedazzled dresses, opera-length gloves, and princess crowns, acting as if they were children in a cheesy room with velvet sofas and baroque lamps. “We seem to have lost touch with our inner children and our inner weirdos”, says Brooke. “If everyone was their most authentic self and embraced the freak within themselves rather than suppressing it, I think the world would be a much better place”, she concludes.
